Crawling speed and full of holes

16th December 2008

WIth rumours of a two speed Internet and security holes in IE7

the digital news this weekend is focusing on the biggest issues for the Internet which will continue to haunt us. It appears there is another security problem in Internet Explorer 7 and this time Microsoft are worried as well. They have issued a warning after thousands of breaches of security on Sunday. This is really a blow for Microsoft especially since Google have announced a pretty good launch of their Chrome browser. On top of this Google actually denied a story about controlling the availability of data by using 'subjective caching'. That means caching  the local information they deem important (or profitable enough) to store and deliver at faster speeds than 'general' info. This is an interesting story and raises questions about 'edge caching' and neutrality and then Virgin in the UK announce 50Mbps fibre optic Internet connection for a price!

So the two big hot potatos of the web, security and speed, come to the fore on the very week the web will have the most traffic.. but what did we expect? Fighting over the telephone was always a big family problem and nothings really changed we are just fighting over bandwidth!

What's the solution for the average business?

1. Make sure you don't make downloading your home page a slow processes.  Optimise it for speed and make all multi-media flash based or optional

2. Optimise and keyword you pages correctly using all the latest Google tips and try and stay on the first couple of pages for your most important keywords. This should mean that you 'cached' pages are up to date and local.

3. Download the Google toolbar and check you backlinks, page rank and cache.

4. Ensure you are using Google Analytics and you check it daily
