XO laptop

Competiton in the sub $100 laptop market is a good thing

The XO laptop, which is now available on a get one, buy one scheme, from Amazon I hope will become a positive force for education and reform across the developing world. With both Intel and AMD particapting in the battle for a share of this market I just hope that this step forward doesn't become a battle for the brands and a functionality arms race for control.

The device is not wholly reliant on boadband connections but, of course, becomes a much more interesting device when linked to the web, but just being able to connect to each other will bring benefits immediately. I can see this becoming much more than just an educational tool in rural areas with communities and business using the device to bring low cost automation in to practise. If that's what you learn to use at school, of course, it will be natural to use the knowledge when you leave. Let's just hope that Google and Microsoft,et al ,will find a way to deliver gadgets and programmes via 'the cloud' which are affordable. Again it does come down to univeral operating systems and unfortunately the XO and Intel's version both use different systems.
